Indonesia national soccer team coach Tae Yong Shin visited Seongnam FC, the club where he has dedicated his entire soccer career as a coach and player. During the visit, Shin was appointed as an advisory board member and advised Seongnam Mayor and owner Shin Sang-jin on the clubhouse naming rights.
At 2 p.m. on the 27th, Shin attended a ceremony at the Seongnam Clubhouse, located in Jeong-dong, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. In addition to Shin, the ceremony was attended by Seongnam Mayor and Owner Shin Sang-jin, Sangmyung University Professor Kim Jung-man, GBS Korea Chairman Oh Sinan, and Seongnam CEO Kim Young-ha.
Shin is the most publicly recognized of the advisory board members. He is a franchise star who represents Seongnam in his soccer career. Shin returned to Korea on the 25th and was planning to take a short break for about a week, but he took time out to attend the ceremony. Shin will serve as an advisor to the club for the next one year.
After the ceremony, he and Mayor Shin looked out over the clubhouse training pitch and offered some advice. Seongnam’s clubhouse is directly adjacent to the up and down lines of the Gyeongbu Expressway. Shin advised the mayor to use the exterior walls facing the highway as a way to promote the club and increase advertising.
One idea was to get sponsorship from a company with ties to Seongnam to promote the exterior wall with the phrase “◯◯◯◯ Seongnam FC Club House”. Shin suggests taking advantage of the club’s location on the Gyeongbu Expressway, which serves as a key thoroughfare in South Korea, and even the entrance to Seoul, to get the word out about the club and reap the rewards. Considering that this is one of the most heavily traveled areas in Korea, Shin’s “marketing idea” makes a lot of sense.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether the team’s owner, Mayor Shin, will be receptive to the idea, and there are legal and institutional hurdles to overcome. However, it is interesting and admirable that Shin, as soon as he is appointed as an advisor, directly presents ideas to the owner that will add value to the team.
