For the second straight day, the Arizona Diamondbacks came from behind to even the series at one game apiece.
Arizona rallied for a 6-5 victory in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, on April 21 to even the series at 2-2.
After dropping Games 1 and 2 on the road, the A’s came back from a 2-1 deficit in Game 3 on Ketel Marte’s game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, with pinch-hitter Alex Thomas hitting a game-tying home run and Gabriel Moreno driving in the winning run.
Arizona will send ace Zach Galen to the mound for Game 5 at 9:07 a.m. on April 22 at the same venue.
Galen took the loss in Game 1, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings. Then-Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler picked up the win with six innings of three-hit, two-run ball. Game 5 will be a return matchup of the two aces, and Galen will be looking to redeem himself. If Arizona wins Game 5, it will take a 3-2 lead in the series with a three-game home sweep and remain one game away from its first World Series appearance in 22 years since 2001.
The game came down to a tight bullpen battle. Arizona starter Joe Mantifly pitched one scoreless inning of one-hit ball, while Philadelphia starter Christopher Sanchez gave up two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings. It was Arizona that came from behind.

Leadoff man Rueredes Gurriel Jr. led off with a double to left off Philadelphia closer Craig Kimbrel. Evan Longoria flied out to left field to put runners at first and second. Thomas, a left-handed pinch-hitter, stepped up to the plate and pounded a two-run double off Kimbrel to tie the game at 5-5. On a full count, he pulled a 93-mph fastball from Kimbrel over the right-center field fence for a 412-foot shot.
Arizona went on to put runners on second and third on a Marte single to left and a Corbin Carroll sac fly before Moreno lined a single up the middle off reliever Jose Alvarado to bring home Marte and cut the lead to 6-5.
Paul Seawald came on in the top of the ninth and gave up a two-out double to Schwarber, but he struck out Turner on a wild pitch to preserve the save.
Kimbrel, who pitched the ninth inning of a 1-1 tie in Game 3 the day before and gave up the game-winning hit to Marte, took the loss and continues to have his worst fall of baseball.
Arizona struck first. In the bottom of the second inning, Christian Walker led off with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman and third on a grounder by Gurriel and a fastball by catcher JT Realmuto. Arizona made it 2-0 in the third when Marte led off with an infield single, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Sanchez and Carroll’s grounder to shortstop, and scored on Moreno’s single to right field.
But the Phillies got a run back in the top of the fourth when leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber hit a solo shot to right-center field. On a full count, Schwarber crushed a 91-mph, seven-seam fastball from left-hander Kyle Nelson over the wall in right-center field. It was Schwarber’s fourth home run of the NLCS, giving him one in Game 1 and two in Game 2.
