Two veteran coaches, Joe Maddon (69) and Buck Showalter (67), want to stay on the field. The teams involved are interesting.
USA Today reported on the rumors surrounding major league managerial hires on Aug. 8, introducing the two managers.
Maddon, who was fired as manager of the Los Angeles Angels in the middle of the 2022 season, still wants to manage.
In particular, he is reportedly coveting the New York Mets managerial job. According to USA Today, Maddon has been expressing his desire to manage the Mets to his friends.
He’s hoping to at least get an interview, according to the outlet.
Maddon is a veteran of 19 seasons in the major leagues, with a record of 1,382 wins and 1216 losses. He has twice led teams to the World Series and last won a World Series title with the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
New York local outlet SNY broke the news, noting that the question remains whether Maddon would be a good fit for the Mets managerial position.
Maddon previously revealed in his book, “The Book of Joe,” that he had a falling out with Angels manager Perry Minasian. Managers who clash with the front office have not been welcomed in the major leagues lately.
New Mets president David Stearns has made the ability to work with the front office a prerequisite for his new manager.
Meanwhile, Showalter, who left the Mets after this season, has been linked to the Angels after Maddon’s departure.
